Rothwell’s newest opening, Bakehouse Bistro & Coffee Tavern, is ready to welcome the community into a beautifully restored local treasure – combining fresh, hearty food with a powerful nod to the town’s heritage through breathtaking artwork by internationally acclaimed local artist Charlie Such.
The building has been fully renovated to the highest standard, transforming a once-tired site into a warm, stylish space filled with history, heart and flavour. By day, the Bistro will serve as a relaxed café – open early, seven days a week – offering fresh coffee, teas, breakfasts, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, and light lunch dishes in a farm-shop-style setting.
But what truly sets Bakehouse Bistro apart is the art that lives within its walls.
Working closely with the team behind the new venue, Charlie Such has created a series of hand-painted murals celebrating Rothwell’s most iconic landmarks – including Holy Trinity Church, the Market House, and the old fire station – culminating in a breathtaking centrepiece honouring the town’s most cherished tradition, the Rothwell Proclamation.
The piece depicts the late Alan Mills, a much-loved local figure, depicted on horseback at the church doors where the Proclamation begins a moment that symbolises the pride and continuity of Rothwell’s heritage. Alan was a true Rothwell legend – founding member of the band Coast to Coast, owner of the town’s stonemasonry business A.J. Mills, and, above all, a kind and generous man who gave endlessly to his community.
“We wanted to do more than just open a café,” says co-owner Guy Angel. “The Bakehouse is part of Rothwell’s story, and we wanted the building to reflect that. Collaborating with Charlie has turned it into something truly timeless – a space where great food, local art and community spirit come together.”
For Charlie, whose work has taken him across the globe, the opportunity to create something lasting in his hometown felt especially meaningful.
“It’s a full-circle moment,” says Charlie Such. “I’ve painted in some amazing places around the world, but this one hits different. To honour Rothwell’s history – the Proclamation, the church, the people – in a space my own family can visit and enjoy, that’s something really special.”
Honouring the Proclamation and Rothwell’s Legacy
For centuries, Rothwell has celebrated Proclamation Monday – the traditional start of the Rowell Fair – when the Bailiff rides to the west door of Holy Trinity Church to read aloud the ancient charter, proclaiming, “God save the King and the Lord of the Manor.”
Charlie’s mural captures this historic moment with depth and emotion, preserving one of Rothwell’s oldest customs for generations to come. The result is a space that not only serves food and coffee, but also tells a story – one of craftsmanship, pride, and belonging.
