Meet, eat and chill at The Optimist

Last week Northampton Life were invited down to check out the newly updated The Optimist pub on St Giles Street, Northampton. It’s important to be optimistic for pub because it’s a surprisingly large pub and restaurant.

Upon entering the pub, there’s loads of seating which one would presume is often full on a Saturday night full of drinkers. However, on a Thursday after work it’s a pleasant atmosphere with the right level of music and groups catching up.

The menu is extensive and provides affordable options to suit any tastes. You can get larger meals or lunch options with plenty of starter/sharer plates available too. We tried the ultimate sharer platter and the wings plate between four of us which was BIG. We may have gone over-board but the menu sounded too tempting! The ultimate sharer is perfect if you’re catching up with friends or want a snack before an evening out. There’s nachos, chicken, pizza bread, breaded mushrooms and more. The wings were meaty and there was plenty of them.

Onto mains and we went for the burgers! There was a veggie option of the halloumi burger, a plain burger, the tacos which were full to the brim of filling and a chorizo burger. You can sense a theme here but the burgers were a great choice with various options for all burger enthusiasts.

The tacos were really quite interesting as they were chicken with barbecue sauce with jambalaya rice on the side. You never get jambalaya rice in pubs so this made a great change!

The only issue we had with the food, we over ordered! We were stuffed from the starters that although we all did our best, we couldn’t finish everything! However, that’s got to be a good thing.

The Optimist is an ideal spot for a drink but the food should not be dismissed. It’s a hidden spot and shouldn’t be just thought of a student drinking space, it’s got a lot going for it. A return is definitely on the cards as nachos are always a firm favourite and they provide lots of drink and food deals to make it an affordable choice in Northampton town centre.

If you would like to visit The Optimist you can find it opposite the post office on St Giles Street. Check out the menu for the food and drinks here.
