Northampton Town Council has celebrated an extraordinary period in the town’s sporting history, formally recognising the achievements of Northampton Saints and Northamptonshire Steelbacks at a meeting held at The Guildhall.
The recognition follows a remarkable year in which Northampton Saints were crowned Gallagher Premiership champions and Northamptonshire Steelbacks lifted the Vitality T20 Blast trophy, bringing two of English sport’s most prestigious domestic honours back to Northampton.
Councillors paid tribute to the players, coaching staff, volunteers and supporters whose commitment has helped put Northampton firmly in the national sporting spotlight.
Council Leader Cllr Les Marriott said: “Northampton has every reason to be proud of what has been achieved over the past year. To see our rugby and cricket clubs crowned champions is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to the talent, dedication and ambition that exists across our town.
“What makes Northampton special is that success is shared. There is a genuine sense that when one of our clubs achieves something remarkable, the whole town celebrates. That connection between our clubs, their supporters and the wider community is something that makes Northampton unique.
Northampton continues to punch above its weight and our sporting success is one of the greatest ambassadors our town could ask for.”
The celebrations also come as excitement builds ahead of the new football season, with Northampton Townpreparing to begin their League Two campaign under the guidance of new boss Chris Hogg. After last season’s disappointing relegation, hopes are high that the Cobblers can mount an immediate challenge for promotion.
Together, the achievements underline Northampton’s unique sporting pedigree. Few towns anywhere in the UK can boast elite professional clubs competing at the highest levels of rugby union, cricket and football. It is a record that sees Northampton consistently punch well above its weight and reinforces its reputation as one of the country’s great sporting towns.
The Town Council also recognised the vital role played by supporters across all three clubs.
Increasingly known collectively as the ‘Shoe Army’, Northampton’s fans have developed a reputation for backing not only their own teams but celebrating success across the town’s sporting family.
Whether at Franklin’s Gardens, Wantage Road or Sixfields, the familiar strains of ‘No Finer Town’ have become a shared anthem that reflects a deep sense of civic pride and a passion for representing Northampton on the national stage.
The Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Mike Hallam, added: “Sport has an incredible ability to bring people together, and nowhere is that more evident than here in Northampton. Across rugby, cricket and football, our supporters demonstrate fierce loyalty, passion and community spirit.
“The growing identity of the Shoe Army perfectly reflects what Northampton is all about. Our supporters stand proudly behind their clubs while sharing a common love for the town itself. Hearing ‘No Finer Town’ sung by thousands of people is a powerful reminder of the pride that exists in Northampton and the belief that, together, we can achieve great things.
“On behalf of the Town Council and the people of Northampton, I congratulate Northampton Saints and Northamptonshire Steelbacks on their outstanding achievements and wish Cobblers every success as they begin the new season. We will all be cheering them on.”
Northampton Town Council hopes the recent successes will inspire more people to get involved in sport, support local clubs and continue building on Northampton’s growing reputation as one of England’s leading sporting towns.
